The metal pipes are sturdy and I have never had an issue with them bending (I bought 6 of them to store clothes on in a storage area).
The width of the rack is adjustable by pulling the side upper tubes out from the rack (they slide inside the center tube). Once you have them extended to the length you want, you lock the side tubes in place by twisting on the T connectors to tighten the extension tubes.
The construction of the plastic parts is ok. My guess is that one would break the plastic parts long before the tubes would bend. The wheels are plastic.
Assembly is easy (you will need a hammer and two blocks of wood). You pound the metal tubes into the base and T connectors. I placed the wooden blocks on each end of the tube with pounding so as to not damage the tubes. This type of slip in construction worried me some at first as I like things to bolt together, etc. But I have had no problems with the tubes pulling out of the plastic parts.
